Earl Grey, the world’s most popular tea blend, requires only two ingredients: black tea and bergamot. This Mediterranean citrus thrives in only a few regions of the world, but ever since it hooked up with Earl Grey, it has landed teacups in every corner of the globe.

This famous blend is named after Charles Grey, a British prime minister in the 1830s. According to some histories, he received the flavored tea as a gift. Others say he rescued a Chinese Mandarin from drowning—even though Charles never traveled to China. Tea lore also claims the bergamot was added to make the tea taste more like a top-notch cultivar.
